Berishaj completed his early education in Tuzi, before
earning his degree in Philosophy and Sociology from the University of Prishtina
. He began his professional career teaching philosophy, sociology, psychology,
and logic at high schools in Pristina and Tuz shortly after graduation.
In 1980, he entered academia as an assistant in sociology
and later became a lecturer in industrial sociology, social structures, and
social development. Berishaj also pursued postgraduate and doctoral studies at
the University of Zagreb, completing his PhD.
Beyond teaching, he contributed to institutional development
and civil society. In 1992 he helped establish the Kosovo office of the Open
Society Foundation (KFOS), which he coordinated until 1999. He also served as a
local manager for a psychosocial trauma treatment program and taught as a visiting
professor in Milan and at the London School of Economics.
Berishaj has held leadership roles at the University of
Prishtina, including serving as Acting Rector, and has been recognized for his
scholarly work with election as a corresponding member of the Academy of
Sciences and Arts of Kosovo (ASHAK).
His academic contributions include numerous published works,
research on family sociology, social change, migration, and Albanian social
structures, as well as work presented at international conferences. Colleagues
describe him as a highly respected educator and intellectual who has made a
lasting impact on sociological scholarship in Kosovo and the Albanian‑speaking
world.
