Çun Mula

Leader of national awakening

Çun Mula was the bajraktar (flag-bearer) of the Hoti tribe in the Malësia region of northern Albania. He was a respected Albanian highlander leader who played an important role in defending the lands of Hoti, Gruda, and the surrounding highlands.

In 1878, he represented Hoti at the League of Prizren, where he was appointed commander of volunteer forces resisting the decision of the Congress of Berlin that planned to give Albanian territories such as Hoti and Gruda to Montenegro. Çun Mula led highlander fighters in several battles, including the Battle of Ržanica, where the Malësor volunteers defeated Montenegrin forces.

Besides being a military leader, he was also known as a wise mediator among northern Albanian tribes, helping resolve conflicts between regional leaders. His courage and leadership became part of Albanian epic tradition and are still remembered in songs performed with the lahuta.

Çun Mula died in 1896 and was buried with honors in his homeland of Hoti, leaving a lasting legacy as one of the prominent leaders of the Albanian highlands.
