Skanderbeg Square is the main central square of Tuzi and one
of the most symbolic places for the Malësia region in Montenegro.
The square is named after Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeu, the
Albanian national hero who led resistance against the Ottoman Empire in the
15th century.
The square is located in the center of Tuzi, near:
• the municipal building of Tuzi
• cafés, shops, and restaurants
• main city streets
It functions as the main gathering place for the town.
People meet there for:
• public events
• celebrations
• political gatherings
• cultural festivals
The most important element of the square is the statue of
Skanderbeg.
The monument symbolizes:
• the Albanian identity of the
Malësia region
• historical resistance and freedom
• respect for national heritage
Skanderbeg is usually shown on horseback holding a sword, representing leadership and military strength.
In recent years the square has been renovated and
modernized.
It now includes:
• pedestrian walking areas
• seating spaces
• lighting and landscaping
• cafés around the square
Because of this it became one of the most lively places in
Tuzi.
After Tuzi became a separate municipality in 2018 (before
that it was part of Podgorica), the local government started to be led mainly
by Albanian political representatives, since Albanians are the majority
population in the Malësia region.
One of the dominant political groups in the local government
has been the Albanian Forum (Forumi Shqiptar), a coalition of Albanian parties
that won the municipal elections.
During this period of Albanian-led municipal leadership, the
idea to build a monument of Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeu in the center of Tuzi
was supported and implemented.
